Golf Into Your 90s: Golf Fitness in Edinburgh and East Lothian
Golf Into Your 90s helps golfers build and keep the strength, mobility and balance they need to carry on playing well into later life. It isn’t an injury clinic. It’s a golf-specific programme from Active X Clinics, built around assessment, training and ongoing support, so you can keep enjoying your golf for as long as possible.
The programme was developed by our Clinic Director, Gavin Routledge, an osteopath with more than 30 years of clinical experience and the author of Pain-free and Confident Golf.
What is Golf Into Your 90s?
Golf Into Your 90s is the golf version of Active for Life, our approach to helping people stay strong, capable and independent as they get older. It also draws on the clinic’s long-standing expertise in back pain and sciatica, two of the most common reasons golfers find themselves playing less.
Rather than waiting for something to go wrong, we look at what your body needs to keep swinging, walking and playing with confidence, then help you build it.
Why physical capability matters for your golf
A good round asks a lot of your body. You need to rotate through your trunk and hips, stay balanced through the swing, bend down to tee up and pick your ball out of the hole, and walk the course for several hours.
Strength, mobility and balance tend to slip gradually over the years if we don’t train them, and golf alone rarely keeps them topped up. Working on them deliberately is one of the best ways to protect the game you love.
How Golf Into Your 90s works
1. Take the Golf Into Your 90s Scorecard
Start with the free Golf Into Your 90s Scorecard. It helps you think about where your body is now and what you’ll need to keep playing for years to come.
2. Book your golf-specific assessment
Meet an Active X clinician for a golf-specific assessment of your physical capabilities. We’ll talk through your golf, your goals and any aches or concerns, then test the movements your game depends on. This is our £25 Active for Life Assessment.
3. Follow your personalised programme
You’ll get a programme built around your results and your golf, so the training you do supports the way you want to play. Beyond your initial assessment, you can choose from:
- One-to-one personal training
- Small-group classes
- Our signature Golf Into Your 90s coaching programme, designed to help you build sustainable habits into your life
- A combination of two or more of these
4. Keep playing, keep progressing
Ongoing strength and fitness support helps you keep hold of what you’ve built, season after season.
Already playing in pain?
If pain is already affecting your golf, we’ll help you deal with that first. Our golf injuries treatment page explains how our osteopaths and physiotherapists help golfers get back on the course, and you can move on to Golf Into Your 90s once things have settled.
From the author of Pain-free and Confident Golf
Gavin’s book, Pain-free and Confident Golf: Six Essential Practices to Master Lower Back Pain, shows golfers with lower back pain or sciatica how to get back to playing with confidence. Golf Into Your 90s takes that thinking a step further, from getting out of pain to staying strong enough to keep playing.
Active X also has an established clinical presence at Archerfield, so we understand what golfers want from their bodies and their game.
Golf Into Your 90s for golf clubs
We’re building partnerships with golf clubs and golf organisations across Scotland, and in time further afield, to help their members keep playing for longer. That can include talks, scorecards and testing events at your club, with assessments and programmes for members who want to go further.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be injured to join?
No. Golf Into Your 90s is for golfers who want to stay strong and keep playing. If you do have pain, we’ll help you settle that first.
I've never done strength training. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Your programme starts from your assessment results, and we build the challenge up gradually as your strength and confidence grow.
Is it only for older golfers?
No. The earlier you start building strength, mobility and balance, the better placed you are to keep playing, whatever your age or handicap.
Can my golf club get involved?
Yes. We run talks, scorecards and testing events with clubs. Contact us to find out more.
