What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapists help patients to recover from often painful acute or chronic injury and conditions, especially to joints, like muscle and ligament injury or arthritis. They help patients of all ages from young children to the elderly, and all walks of life from work or home related conditions to professional athletes.
The main goal of physiotherapy is to reduce pain, restore normal function and movement and prevent further injury.
After a detailed assessment and diagnosis, your Physiotherapist will use a combination of hands-on treatment, exercise and other modalities like shockwave, dry needling and laser therapy to help the recovery and repair process.

What Does A Physiotherapist Do?
Physios use manual therapy, electrotherapy, exercise prescription, lifestyle advice and more to help you to recover from and to avoid injury..
Diagnose
A physiotherapist is highly skilled in carrying out a thorough and detailed assessment to help establish the cause of your symptoms. Once this is complete your physiotherapist will explain the findings and probable diagnosis. In some cases they may recommend further investigation like X-ray or MRI and are able to refer you for this.
Assess Posture & Function
Occasionally, pain can lead to poor posture and function. However, far more common, poor posture or function can lead to pain. Physiotherapists are experts in assessing both your posture and the way you move and how to fix it.
Treatment
Once a diagnosis has been established, your physiotherapist will discuss the recommended treatment in detail. Treatment generally consists of a combination of hands-on treatment (Manual Therapy), exercise prescription and sometimes electrotherapy. Loads of great advice will be provided so that you leave your appointment understanding your condition and wat needs to be done to fix it.
Manual Therapy
Hands-on techniques are at the focal point of most treatment sessions. For example, joint mobilisation or manipulation, traction. Movement patterns, myofascial release, massage techniques, dry needling and other manual techniques.
Shockwave Therapy
We are one of only a few clinics in Edinburgh to use Shockwave Therapy. Our shockwave equipment is made by Storz Medical in Switzerland, the world leaders in shockwave Therapy. Shockwaves, despite the name, are pain free and help the body to regenerate new tissue to replace damaged tissue that is not healing or responding to conventional treatment. Shockwave treatment is a highly successful treatment for chronic injuries.

I had the pleasure of attending Maëlle Guennec's talk on Women's health and the pelvic anatomy yesterday. I was won over by her confidence, her smile and by how passionate she was about her topic. She taught us a lot about our own bodies all the while setting up a confortable, warm and safe environment thanks to which everyone felt engaged in the talk. Keep up the good work, Maëlle !
