Should my acute back pain keep me off work?

Another question I get asked a lot is “should my acute back pain keep me off work?”

And the answer to that question is “if you are as likely to aggravate your back at home as you are at work, then you may as well be at work.” If, on the other hand, you have to do things at work that will obviously aggravate your pain, and you can avoid doing those things at home, then you should stay off work until you are able to cope with those things again.

However, it is important that you do not just sit around as I said in my post about managing acute and chronic back pain

The desire to get back to work is an admirable one, but if you push your back too hard you will only end up needing more time off than if you had given your back the 2 or 3 days it needed to begin with. Be sensible!
