Staying motivated to overcome your back pain I

Over the last few weeks I have been adding exercises for back pain and when you are in pain it is easy to seek out help and put some exercises together – then the pain disappears and you forget to do them one day, then the next and before you know it you aren’t bothering until the pain shows up again. So, I wanted to include some information on staying motivated to overcome back pain that I will cover over two posts.

Human beings are frequently lazy – we often try to get by on the minimum work. If you take this attitude over a chronic back problem, you will probably always have a back problem.

If I stood over you all the time and kicked you in the back every time you were lazy with your posture or failed to do your exercises you would soon learn and make things routine. My aim here is to help you adopt good habits and avoid bad ones. Tomorrow I will focus on a great tool that will help you motivate yourself so watch out for that.

If you merely think to yourself “oh yes, no more back pain, won’t that be great? Yes, I really fancy that, I’ll give Gavin’s exercises a go” it’s all too easy to let things slide. You need more than just thinking or knowing that exercise for back pain is a great idea – you MUST BE COMMITTED to it.

  • How much does it matter to you?
  • Do you really want to suffer less back pain?

When setting your sites on a worthwhile goal (in this instance overcoming chronic back pain) you need to write it down – you don’t have to share it with anyone unless you think you will benefit from someone else keeping an eye on you. Keep it private if you prefer.

If you merely dream of being pain free, it will always remain exactly that – a dream. If you think of it as achievable, and something you desperately want, give yourself the best chance of staying motivated to overcome your back pain by:

  • Writing your goal down
  • Writing down your commitment to the goal
  • Giving yourself a time frame over which to achieve this goal

Tomorrow, I am going to give you questions that you need to answer. You will write them down and use them to motivate yourself.

This can work whether you need motivation to overcome chronic back pain, lose weight, keep exercising and staying fit. Whatever your health and fitness goal is these questions will help.
